DR BONES
Dr Bones is a driving synthpop track about knowing something is wrong, even when no one believes you.
Powered by classic vintage synths and drum machines at 125 BPM, it’s retro synthpop modernised with a splash of nu-disco.
It touches on the realities of living with chronic illness, giving voice to those navigating conditions that are often misunderstood.
The title was inspired by my childhood doctor, whose real name happened to be Dr Bone — a small moment of nominative determinism that stuck with me long enough to become a song.
Lyrics
VERSE 1
It’s not an antidote to feeling blue
It’s just the same effect as deja vu
Always inside my head and that’s a thing
It’s not the perfect time for me to think
CHORUS 1
Oh Dr Bones
I feel my heart beat in my throat
You don’t know
But there’s something going on
Oh Dr Bones
The more I try, the worse it goes
I am tired
And there’s something going on
VERSE 2
It’s not the great escape from house arrest
It’s just the simple things without regret
Not quite the sort of stuff I’m well equipped
And this is not the purpose-built mothership
CHORUS 2
Oh Dr Bones
I feel my heart beat in my throat
You don’t know
But there’s something going on
Oh Dr Bones
The more I try, the worse it goes
I am tired
And there’s something going on
MIDDLE 8
Oh Dr Bones, is it possible, now
For me to know?
VERSE 3
It’s not the single point of compromise
It’s just an endless stream of alibis
Always on my screen and in my mind
You don’t know what it is or what they’ll find
CHORUS 3
Oh Dr Bones
I feel my heart beat in my throat
You don’t know
But there’s something going on
Oh Dr Bones
The more I fear, the more it grows
I got to know
If there’s something going on
If there’s something going on
