It’s Gone

Some years ago, when I pushed on despite the worsening of a chronic health condition, my doctor gave me a chilling warning:

“Craig, life will go on without you, but it will be without you.”

It’s Gone grew from that realisation. It is a bittersweet reflection on the passage of time, lost youth, mortality, and the parts of ourselves that disappear as life moves forward. The song looks back towards the freedom and innocence of childhood whilst confronting the uncomfortable truth that we can never return to who we once were.

The repeated refrain — “I feel it but I know it’s gone” — is about that sense of loss: knowing that something once existed, being able to feel its presence in your memory, but knowing that it cannot be recovered.

Musically, It’s Gone is a melodic synthpop ballad drawing on the darker, melancholic side of the genre, with influences ranging from Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys to Tears for Fears and Röyksopp.

Lyrics

Once I was fine
Deep in my mind
Never wanted this
Year after year
Tear after tear
Into the mist

From chaos and time
Came a world of surprise
And a troubled youth
Why am I here
With so many fears
And bitter truths?

I know, I know, I know
I feel it but I know it’s gone
I know, I know, I know
I feel it but I know it’s gone

Remember the child
Spirit of the wild
In the open woods
Caught by the new
Lost in the blue
And the greater good

Like father like son
Life will go on
Outside of you
But it will be without you
Forever without
You know it’s true

I know, I know, I know
I feel it but I know it’s gone
I know, I know, I know
I feel it but I know it’s gone

I know, I know, I know
I feel it but I know it’s gone
I know, I know, I know
I feel it but I know it’s gone

I know
I feel it but I know it’s gone
I know
I feel it but I know it’s gone
