ALGORITHM

Algorithm is a collection of ten songs spanning ten years of songwriting. It is the first in a series of albums drawing on my deep and ever-growing archive of material.

The album features six new and unreleased songs, as well as new mixes of recent Space March singles, and a completely new version of the past single – Saturn’s Sun, with “Again” appended to the title.

Algorithm is grounded in 80s-influenced Synthpop, but sometimes dips into Synthwave and Britpop. I cover topics like the influence of social media, fear of change, time, the nature of art and life, egocentricity, nostalgia, anxiety and failure – you know, the usual pop stuff!!

Lyrics

Find the needle’s eye
Swim to the other side
What is chance
And where is the point of believing?

Get it back in black
Break your crippled back
Pay off your house
Your taxes and your dreaming

Round and round we go
The circus and the show
Never really knowing what it means

And I want to see
For a million miles
And I want to live to be free
And where is the point you believe?

Open-up your house
Find a lonely spouse
Fill in the gaps
Perpetuate the kingdom

Paint the kitchen green
Face your recurring dream
Pick-up the scraps
And make them into something

Round and round we sail
Like Jonah and the Whale
Washed-up on the beach when we fail

It’s not the same
But it kind of is
Will we change
Through all of this?
A pattern is repeating
It’s the same old stuff they’re speaking
It’s a silent stress
No you can’t forget

It’s much the same
As déjà vu
Will it change
What we do?
This all seems too familiar
And their bullet’s painted silver
Shooting up a mess
An existential threat

Faded by the light now
Just no time to go back now
Got to move it all along
Shine until it’s gone

Can’t you see
How this could be
What you do to me
When you shine

A pattern is repeating
It’s the same old stuff they’re tweeting
It’s more or less
A failed test

Later in the night
There is no epitaph or light
It’s an overflow
To the great unknown
Now I’ve been here quite a while
And all these tensions grow inside
This autonomic fear
It could last for years

So here I am
A thousand miles from you
Mirrored in our minds
With everything we do
In synchronicity
With all sincerity
Get me out of here
Get me out of here

I’m looking for a way
Get back to what we do
I want to walk my dog
I want to hold you too
I’m caught up in this place
Entangled in regret
I want to go home
But it’s not over yet

Playing on my mind
Every truth and every lie
I go down every road
It’s an overload
Like a kite into a storm
I have no power to perform
Can I change it all?
Can I close the door?

And it seems to me
That we can’t let go
Of our memories
And our former ghosts
When all I want to do
Is reconnect with you
So get me out of here
Get me out of here

How many miles away
Does it take to ignore
What’s in your domain?
It’s not about you
You’re not the one
When your world seems small
You know it’s Saturn’s sun

Are you feeling controlled
Don’t know what to believe
Do you get brushed off
Are you that naive, again?

How many times today
Can you turn your head
And walk away?
It’s not about you
You’re not the one
When your world seems small
You know it’s Saturn’s sun

Will they let you speak
Are you locked in a box
With your job on the line
And your head on the block, again?

Oh, it’s a long time running
With the light in your eyes
You’ll never see it coming
But the look on your face
And the sweat on your skin
The fear in your voice
The battle within

How I try to explain
The eye of the storm
Is heading your way
It’s not about you
You’re not the one
When your world seems small
You know it’s Saturn’s sun

Will you self-destruct
Can you disappear
Are you a blip on the screen
Are you feeling the fear, again?

Oh, it’s a long time running
By the look on your face
You never saw it coming

What do you do
When your algorithm
Doesn’t love you anymore?

It preys every night on your misery
Your dynamic feed is just a mystery
It thinks it understands what you want see
And it all keeps coming back to “me”

It knows just what to think when you’re in doubt
And when your social proof is going south
It tells you what your friends are all about
And it all keeps coming back to “me, me, me”

It has no appetite to be unique
More the same just a little tweak
A map of your life for the coming weeks
There’s nothing more you could ever need

“I believe that art is the only form of activity in which man, as man, shows himself to be a true individual, and is capable of going beyond the animal state.”
Marcel Duchamp, 1956

I reached the destination
From a wormhole in my mind
It’s 1912, Paris yells:
“A man is changing time”
It’s all lines and planes and movement
And a head without a face

It’s like a…
Nude descending staircase
Talking da, da, da; da, da, da;
What’s this strange illusion
Is it art, art, art; art, art, art?

Is this the future, I can see?

I left the salon thinking
What is it that I’ve seen?
The avant-garde is reeling
It’s not quite what it seems
It’s all lines and planes and movement
And a head without a face

Is this the future, I can see?
It scares the living daylights out of little me

“Art is an outlet towards regions, which are not ruled by time and space. To live is to believe.”
Marcel Duchamp, 1956

It’s all new, new, new
It’s all “me, me, me”
Now it’s much the same today
And it’s all we want to see

It’s a running fight
It’s a complicated world
With a fading light
Your predilection will unfurl
Ah, you know what’s right
But you never make a sound
Then your day is night
And you’re floating out of town

Nostalgia, through and through
You can’t think of anything else
Nostalgia, shining through
Always reflecting yourself

Like an 80s flick
It’s a little silly now
But on the face of it
It charms us all somehow
These times are dark
In a stark reality
And looking back
There was so much possibility

It’s a wistful past
That feels like nostalgia
And you’re home at last
But nothing‘s the same, I’m afraid

Nostalgia, more and more
Shying from anything new
Nostalgia, rise and fall
The present is waiting for you

Darling
We’ve travelled so far today
And you know that
We’re here to stay
For a week of so
We’ll be in Tokyo
In crowded trains
And electric rain
I’m not afraid of…

The neon lights
And the endless nights

I feel like
You know what I’m going to say
And the words keep
Falling away
We’re not alone
Here in Tokyo
In a human sea
Of make believe
I’m not afraid of…

The neon lights
And the endless nights

This is where we’ve been
And for all we’ve seen
The neon signs
And electric skies
I’m not afraid
Of a god who dies
Or a fish that flies
We’re changing lines
And we’re stealing time
We’re not afraid of…

The neon lights
And the endless nights

I don’t know what it is
But I know what it’s not
I can’t say how I feel
‘cause the feeling just stopped
But I know what it’s like
To be here by your side

I don’t know how to face
The start of the day
I can’t get out of bed, now
Till it’s all gone away
But I know what it’s like
To feel hollow inside

It’s no fun
With all your best years gone
Struggling to find some time
It’s on your mind…
I don’t know what it is?

I don’t know what it is
To be loud and be heard
I can’t say how it feels, now
‘cause the feeling’s absurd
But I know what it’s like
To be lost in the light

I don’t know how to change
Or where I go wrong
I can’t seem to explain
In the words of a song
But I know what it’s like
To be here by your side
Yes, I know what it’s like
To be here by your side

It’s more than a dream
It’s not what it seems
It could be worse
You know that it hurts
We fall into place
We’re drifting through space
All part of a scheme
It’s more than we see

You just can’t help but feeling down
Trying to count the cost
And your world, it may fall apart
But nothing is ever lost
Every chapter is always there
With time in a single block
And your life’s in a million scenes
Nothing is ever lost

It’s hard to ignore
That time is a fraud
You try to forget
You’re a fish in the net

You just can’t help but feeling down
Trying to count the cost
And you hope they will understand
That nothing is ever lost
Every beat in the universe
Every building block
Is transforming before my eyes
Nothing is ever lost

It’s all that we know
It’s part of the show
We look through the lens
We try to make sense
